Howden’s core focus is on providing quality solutions for air and gas handling and have over a century of experience in doing so. We are hiring a Shipping/Crater Rigger for our Windsor, CT location.
What Will You Do?
The Crater/Rigger is responsible for crating and rigging large industrial blowers and vacuum systems for shipment. This role involves building custom wooden crates and skid systems and safely handling and positioning equipment using hoists and powered industrial material moving equipment. The Crater/Rigger ensures all items are properly protected for transport by applying correct carpentry, blocking, bracing, and rigging practices, and by confirming accurate labeling and identification in accordance with shipping and safety requirements.
Key Responsibilities
• Build custom wooden crates, pallets, and skids to specification using measurements, drawings, and diagrams.
• Rig, block, and brace large industrial blowers and vacuum systems for transport using approved methods, chains, slings, straps, and hardware.
• Safely handle and position equipment using hoists and powered industrial material moving equipment.
• Protect sensitive components using appropriate materials such as shrink wrap, foam, desiccants, and corrosion inhibitors per customer and shipping requirements.
• Operate carpentry and power tools—including saws, nail guns, drills, and hand tools—safely and effectively; maintain tools, equipment, and consumables.
• Assist with loading and securing heavy machinery for shipment, coordinating activities with the Shipper/Receiver and logistics personnel.
• Ensure all crates and shipments are properly labeled and identified in accordance with shipping and safety standards.
• Document crating builds, maintain a standards/designs library, and recommend improvements to crating and rigging methods.
• Collect and dispose of clean wood and construction wood daily.
• Serve as backup for shipping/receiving operations.
• On-site warehouse/manufacturing environment; ability to move between office and floor; lifting requirements as applicable; PPE per safety policy.
• Additional duties as assigned.
Your Physical Work Environment Will Require…
Standing, bending, stooping, for a period of time. Walking the production floor. Reading documents to build crate.
Your Experience Should Be...
• GED/High School diploma
• Manufacturing environment experience
• 1–3 years of shipping, receiving, or warehouse experience.
• Forklift operation experience.
• Knowledge of woodworking tools and ability to read a tape measure.
• Experience hoisting and handling large industrial components or machinery.
• Familiarity with LTL/FTL, small parcel systems, and export documentation.
